How To Finish Your Wood Floor With Tung Oil

How to finish your wood floor with tung oil

Tung oil has been around for centuries, but not originally as a floor finish. If you're unfamiliar with tung oil, read on to find out why parquet enthusiasts are turning to this eco-friendly flooring and how to use it. Typically, tung oil for wood floors will have a solvent to help it penetrate deeper into the wood. If you are going to finish the floor, do not use pure tung oil. 7 FAQs on How to Apply Tung Oil Finish

Use tung oil for wood and various surfaces including brick, concrete and stone. For wood floors, use tung oil only on unfinished wood that will allow the oil to penetrate. Watch this video, "How to Apply Pure Tung Oil to Wood (The Right Way)", for more details. To see a demonstration, watch "Tinting Tung or True Oil with Wood Dyes".

Another option if you want to color tung oil is to use oil soluble aniline dye crystals. For pro tips, watch this video, "How to Use Half and Half Tung Oil on a Wood Floor."

Regarding the amount of tung oil the man used in the video above, handyman Matt Yates shared his experience on applying tung oil to his floor. This is a 3-step procedure for cleaning a wood floor with a tung oil finish:

Vacuum or dust mop with a microfiber dust mop. There are two ways to remove tung oil from wood floors, either solvents or sanding. A tung oil finish using solvents can dry in a day or two, but it takes 15-30 days to fully cure. Advantages

Natural and non-toxic (when diluted with citrus oil)

Matte finish

Easy touch-ups and repair scratches

It does not show dents and scratches like a glossy surface finish

The inconvenients

You should add a fresh coat every year or two

It does not provide a glossy finish

You cannot use bleach or harsh disinfectant cleaners

Tung oil on oak gives a hard golden satin finish.

Floor Oil

Preparing a floor for oiling

As you would with any flooring, sand your wood using 120 grit sandpaper with a floor sander. Let the dust settle before vacuuming it up.

Ryton Flooring

For those who want a quick answer and aren't interested in the details, I'll keep it simple: I recommend using oil for most oak floors and lacquer for most pine floors. At Ryton Flooring we use Pallmann finishes, which we believe are the best available, and this article refers specifically to their floor oils and lacquers. Floor lacquers (often called varnishes by non-flooring professionals) are, with very few exceptions, water-based products. Appearance

Due to the way they work, flooring oils give a much more natural "unfinished" look, while a floor that has been lacquered tends to have a more coated look. On pine floors it usually yellows the wood, so I wouldn't normally recommend using it in that case (unless the floor is stained). Most lacquers (referred to in our citations as "standard" lacquers) will yellow and darken pine and oak floors slightly compared to unfinished flooring, but on oak floors they darken them much less than Magic Oil. Advantages of oiled floors

- Application and drying time: Pallmann Magic Oil is applied in one process and is fully cured after 12 hours (meaning the part can be fully used again with full protection after just 12 hours). - Suitable for high wear areas: 2-component oils such as Pallmann Magic Oil have excellent chemical and wear resistance, and are widely used in commercial applications such as pubs, restaurants and outlets sale. In the long term, an oiled floor is more cost effective as it will not need re-sanding, as re-oiling often adds protection and refreshes the appearance (see our maintenance page). - Repairs: Oiled floors can be repaired relatively easily and worn areas can be "patched" without the need for a full sanding process. - Environmentally friendly: Pallmann Magic Oil contains no VOCs (volatile organic compounds)

Disadvantages of oiled floors

- Yellow appearance on unstained pine floors

- Prone to water/staining if water sits on floor for long periods of time

- Not recommended for very soft pine floors (usually pine floors made within the last 30-40 years)

- The spaces between the boards must be filled before application. - Requires lubrication every 1-2 years to maintain optimum protection and appearance

- Not suitable for gyms due to slip resistance (see below)

Slip resistance

Pallmann Magic Oil is suitable for domestic and commercial use, including schools and community halls, pubs, restaurants and retail outlets. Pallmann lacquers (2-component type) comply with the EN 14904 standard on slip resistance for sports halls.’

Take a look at our demonstration video on the application of Oleofloor:

They can be used on all types of parquet, new and old, including parquet and veneer. Similar to Oleofloor Natural and Oleofloor Classic, Deks Olje D1 works by deeply saturating the wood to protect it from the inside out. Once the wood has been stripped and cleaned, allow the wood to dry for 2-3 days before applying Deks Olje D1. Previously coated surfaces (Paint, Stain, Varnish, Waterproofing)

All previous coatings must be completely removed with a product such as DSP 800 and stripped surfaces neutralized with denatured alcohol, acetone, white spirit or a similar solvent-based product, before applying Deks Olje D1.

Oil Vs Polyurethane Finished Wood Floors

Oil finished wood floors VS polyurethane

Whether you have traditional oak hardwood floors or engineered hardwood floors, choosing the best floor finish is essential. When it comes to finishes for wood floors, polyurethane (water-based and oil-based) is among the most popular choices. But recently, oil-finished wood floors have made a comeback. With the growing demand for reclaimed hardwood floors, oiled finishes have also grown in popularity. Are very durable and water resistant

Must be reconditioned every 7-12 years

Acts as a raincoat and protects the floor

Adds multiple layers of coating joints to the surface and protects against moisture and damage

Tends to scratch more easily

Cannot be repaired locally, requires sanding and covering the entire floor

The products required to clean polyurethane finished wood floors are not expensive

Ideal for high or high traffic rooms

Comes in gloss, gloss and matte finishes

Can be wiped off easily; spills do not seep into the body of the floor

Oil finished wood floor

The oil finish is comparable to moisturizers on the skin. Gives a natural, matte look

A slightly higher level of maintenance is required on a regular basis

Must be re-oiled every 3-5 years

Does not create a layer on the surface; blends into wood

Feeds the wood with more oil

Can be treated locally if the damage is in a particular location

Provides protection both on the surface and in the central area

Comes with a brushed effect to show off the grains of the wood

Easy application and finish

The cost of products used to clean oil-finished wood floors is slightly high

Polyurethane finished wood floors and oil finished wood floors have their own advantages and disadvantages. Oil-finished wood floors can be refreshed from time to time, while polyurethane-finished wood floors require complete removal and reapplication.
