Distressed hardwood floors are meant to look naturally worn for a more authentic wood feel. Please note that this flooring is nominally 3/4″ thick, but due to its scraping process, the thickness can be as thin as 5/8″.

All About Our Dark Hardwood Floors | A review and the pros and cons of having hand-scraped dark hardwood flooring in your home. Today I'm addressing a question that I'm often asked: the pros and cons of having dark hardwood floors. When it came to choosing new flooring for our home, I always had a very clear vision of having extremely dark hardwood floors. I'm told Virginia Mill Works Harvest Hickory is very similar, just slightly lighter and a bit warmer in color. Although we weren't planning on moving anytime soon, we knew we would get our money back for the "first floor hardwoods". We chose not to try re-varnishing the existing hardwoods and filling them in with new boards as they were all at different heights - so there wouldn't be a smooth transition anyway. High maintenanceWhile reviewing samples, we were repeatedly warned that dark floors were not a good choice for us, with a young family and a dog. However, it just wasn't what I was looking for. Best of all, it's lightweight and easy for kids to use, so they can be sent out to grab it and clean up after them if they make a mess. For cleaning, the floors look brand new when I go over them with the Shark Steam mop. If I had to choose the biggest problem with dark floors, I'd say cleaning would be this. However, it's not a deal breaker and probably keeps us cleaner in the grand scheme of things (which certainly isn't a bad thing!). Java Gel Stain is a close color match
Now that we're three years away, we've inevitably had a few scratches as well. The floors are extremely close in color to General Finishes Java Gel Stain, so I use a cotton swab to apply it, along with some high traffic polyurethane. In a pinch, we also used black permanent marker in spots, and you can't even tell. I was given a robot vacuum as a gift, and it couldn't navigate the bumpy floors. Plus, if we ever decide to refinish these floors, the hand-scraped texture means we'll have to do some extra sanding. However, I knew that was impractical at this stage of life because of their softness. Contrary to popular belief, I'm not against oak, but hickory has proven to be a tougher option. Overall, the benefits of beauty, durability, and character outweigh the cons of visible dust for me.
