What Wood Stains Complement Brazilian Cherry Hardwood?

With its opulent and natural coloring, the Brazilian Cherry is often left unblemished and instead finished with a clear, protective varnish.

Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba): What You See Is Not Always What You Get!

Everyone loves the rich natural beauty of Brazilian Cherry (Jatoba) hardwood floors; however, it is a product that requires some education in order to avoid problems later. Northern Brazil is where most Brazilian cherry hardwood floors were originally harvested, but now many harvesters have moved to Peru where the wood has different characteristics. For many years, jatoba was harvested in the northern regions of Brazil (hence the name Brazilian cherry), but recently many companies have moved their logging operations to Peru. But there is something else to consider and that is Jatoba's natural light sensitivity which results in a drastic change in color once the newly harvested and engineered flooring is exposed to natural light. It's true, the Brazilian cherry is extremely sensitive to light and in its freshly ground state will appear in color ranges from salmon to blonde, but when exposed to light it will quickly change to burgundy or in dark brown (as demonstrated in the image to the left). This process is called oxidation and is a natural occurrence in some woods including American Cherry, Cumaru, Ipe, Tigerwood (most exotic species). The time it takes for wood to fully oxidize varies depending on the amount of natural light it is directly exposed to, but generally it takes several months for this transformation to occur. The age of the flooring and where the trees were harvested can have a big effect on the aging of Brazilian cherry hardwood floors.
